The remains of the fossil whale which have been found on the coast of Ystad, in tlie .Baltic, and even lar inland in Wanyapanse, .Westergothlarid, betoken a whale which, although not than 50 or 60 feet in length, inuet at least have had a body 27 times larger and heavier than that ol the common or right whale. - ' „
A SKATING RINK uj.< SALT. At the Berlin Zoo a skating rinu made ol salt was recently opened. Ihe salL was produced by purely chemical means and (without tho employment ot a costly refrigerating process. it resembled ice in every way, was odourless and proof' against any heat below eighty-six degrees I aiirenheit. This salt rink, was made alter a process invented aud patented uy Doctor Edward Arnold. It can bo applied over wood, cement or asphalt, or boards can bo coated with it and arranged to form floors. It is applied in successive layers and the "snow" abraded by the skates can bo collected and melted with fresh material. The quality required I for a single layer is about one-tilth of a pound per square loot. A fresh layer applied a week suiliceti to keep an or--1 dinary rink in repair.
