In idle moments mathematicians often have iumised themselves with the recurring decimal, ami have wondered at i:t> persistency. The question oi wandering stuck within the borough brought up regularly at the meeting's ol the Levin Uoroiigh Council threatens to rival the decimal. Sometimes it is brought up in the midst ol other business ; il not the Mayor s question: "Any other business gentlemen!''' brings to some councillor's mind the number ot stock he has seen watidering about the roads, and the necessity ol keeping the roads clear is stressed biiefly or at length. At last , meeting. Councillor Vincent gave details of-the fitock ho had seen on the loads during a lew days last week. On one ol' the days, a Jersey bull announced its presence on .Bartholomew road by roaring at him. .Next day the animal was still on the road; this time accompanied tiy live cows. On another day there was a great number ol stock in upper Queen-street. .Something should be done in the matter. Councillor France said thoy had discussed the question over and over again, and had come to the Council and talked and all the good it did ——. It hail beaten the Council. The Maj'or agreed with the remarks of Councillor France. He (the Mayor) had a man come into his bedroom the other morning, and spend about an hour talking about the the roads. The Town Clerk said that people came along and made complaints, but when asked to put their names to them, declined to do so. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee by the Council in the hope tliat it may devise a practicable scheme ol keeping the borough clear of stock. A report circulated widely on Saturday that the New Zealand .Fifth Reinforcements had been cut up badly m action is not correct. The Prime 'Minister declared yesterday that the report was absolutely without foundation. the approach 01 spring the number of suppliers, and the quantity of milk arriving daily at the Levin butter factory are increasing rapidly, and the factory now ie separating every day. The increase of milk is having its effect on the butter market and butter has been lowered 2d per lb within the last few days. ( .
At its meeting last ovcning the Levin Borough Council passed for payment accounts totalling £92 bs 7d. Mr J. Veruor, ■buttor-inaker at the Levin butter factory tor some considerable time, has been appointed ■manager of the Mauricevillo butter factory. A London cable message states that tho casualties of tho British forces for the week-end were: 45 officers and \)HI men killed; I ( J9 officers and 190-i men ■wounded. It is reported that the season iu the Canterbury district ha» been exceptionally dry so far, and in many instances water has to be carted for household use. Councillors Blenkhorn and Dempsey have been appointed by ilie Levin Borough Council to sign tne rate books, on behalf of the Council, lor the years 1914-iyio and IUIO-lUlli respectively. Tyke to Heatherlea Goll Chub will be completed to-morrow afternoon, when all members who have nut played already will be eligible to play. Particulars arc set out by advertisement in this issue, The Levin Ladies' Branch ol St. John Ambulance assembled last night when Dr Davies delivered the last ol Ins series of lectures on ambulance work. There was a large attendance, and the lecturer's remarks and demonstrations were followed with close interest.
