The Greymouth Star says—The death of Private T. Mclvain (ol Levin), in the .Dardanelles, has caused sincere regret in musical circles in Greymouth. He was a meniher of ttie Greymouth Orchestral Society and Battalion Hand and was a cornet player ol some ability. lie was formerly a member of the Hokitiki Municipal Band and was a resident at Greymouth at the time of enlisting. Levin Defence itifle Club will hold its annual general meeting to-night (Thursday) m the drillshed. A full muster of members is desired.

While friendly society members Dear the whole cost of their own assurance and administration, they are compelled by taxation to contribute to a fund in direct competition to themselves, i'his meeting respectfully requests the Government to immediately discontinue the lecturers, canvassers, etc., on bohall of the National Provident Fund, and either withdraw all Government assistance to the Fund, or grant the Friendly Societies the same measure of assistance as is given to the National Provident Fund." A copy of the resolution will be sent to the Minister m charge of Friendly Societies-

A'maetiug of (women interested in the "send-off" for the men of the Kighth Reinforcements, is called at the Borough office to-morrow, Friday, at 3 p.m. We feel sure that a large number will be present, and that the ladies will do full justice to the o'bjects of the meeting

Colonel Davies, D.5.0., in a letter from him received by his brother in Levin, mentions that the troops in South Africa experienced great hardships during tho recent lighting against the German colonists. The men were on short commons,, and the horses reduced to eating bark irom trees. In ispite of all, the men were cheerful, and behaved splendidly in the fighting, the lire in which proved worse thai any experienced by Colonel Davies in tlio Boer War. During an engagement in April Inst the colonel was struck in tho throat by a bullet, but fortunately it only passed under the skin.
