It is reported that several -jl the wounded soldiers who returned to New Zealand by the 'Wtillochra were so shaken by their experiences abroad that they have been admitted to the I'orirna mental hospital. The death occurred of Mm.John Horn o( the Lower Unit, on Tuesday, aged 27 years. Mrs Horn's lather i.s a wellknown resident of ivnku, and the family liiive gone to attend the funeral. It is probable that Mr Stan. Hrewster, at one time in business in Otaki. will leave Wellington to-day for England, lie having been accepted bv the Defence Department as a motor mechanic to the Klying Corps. A sad fatality occurred at Manakaiif when a middle-aged Native woman, named Mrs Ivira (wife of the Native ivho some time ago committed suicide at M-anakau) .succumbed to severe burns received on Tuesday night last. Deceased was sleeping near a fire on Tuesday night, when her clothes ignited. The unfortunate woman was very ba.lly burned from her legs right up to her neck before the flnmes were extinguished. She suffered terribly. It is pleasing to hear that Pvt. Tom l<Veenian, son of Mr H. Freeman, of Otaki, who was wounded in three places at the Dardanelles, ami was recently reported as dangerously dl. is now making good progress towards recovery. It is now thought likelv that he will be invalided home shortly. Recently Mr Field had the assurance of the Postniafiter-Gwieral that an additional telephone circuit would be provided between Paekakariki and Waikanae. It is pleasing to know that Mi- Field has now been notified that instructions have been given 'or the erection of the wire to be proccdi'd with. This will he good news to settlers' in that part of the district.
