The Electric Company's employees chartered the steamer Eastlaiid for 'i day's picnicking and 25U0 persons were crowded aboard. 'While tliu vessel was moored at the wharf, the weight of humanity caused her to li.st, and many 101 l and rolled to the wrong side. The vessel heeled over, broke her hawsers and floated into the middle of the river ■with her side submerged. Scores were drowned in their cabins and. tthers leaped into the river. It is impossible to ascertain the number oT dead which is known to exceed 1000. Over 700 were caught in the cabins. The firemen cut through the sides of the steamer, but all inside were de.i I. The police have arrested <ill the officials of the steamship company.
