A fire last evening caused considerable damage in a block ol buildings in Litchlield-fctreet, owned by R. E. England. Tho flames swept the top floor, used as a soft goods wjarehouso by Archibald Clarke and Sons, Ltd. The fire completely destroyed the large stock which was insured for £1500 n the South British office and for £1500 in the New Zealand Fire Office. The stock on the ground floor was owned by Ford and Mirams, and it also was damaged. MAGAZINES, ETC., FOR SOLDIERS Wellington, This Day. Excitement was caused at Lyttelton this morning by a man who informed tho police that his mate had been murdered in his bach. The police, after making arrangements for the removal of the body visited the house, but fouud that the man was only sound asleep. The first man was then arrested on a charge of drunkenness.
