To Grass Rough Places
Those who desire a good grass for hillttops and one to grow m gullies and rough places in high country should try Danthonia pilosa. O broken country poorly grassed in the first place or -which has been sufbsequently overstocked and where topdressing is out of the question the use of danthonia is specially advisable. One distinct advantage of this native grass is that when, it becomes too coarse for grazing it can be burnt off, when fresh young growth will come away again in the spring. Especially is this method serviceable where the danthonia is growing in gullies among fern ,aiKr other rough material, as the burning clears away all this ideal covering for rabbits. When the grass becomes overgrown cattle can be turned on to it. These usually thrive on the feed. In the last autumn,iwJien danthonia is too coarse even for cattle, the burning can take place In sowing the danthonia, which should be at the rate of Gib. to the acre, the seed may be thoroughly .mixed with a clean chaff. This will enable the effective distribution of a eeed which s very difficult to sow when used by itself, (''rait care is necessary to secure ■tt thorough mixing of the seed and th& ciiatf. " Not more than about a shovelfull fthoukl. V mixed at the one time. —W. Wiibb-JL' in N.Z. Agricultural Gazette.
