LAYING DOWN A LAWN.
WFien it is desired to form a la.vn, Hie ground should be trenched as directed for the vegetable garden any time during the autumn. If the plot can be prepared in March, a season n:ay be gained by sowing the grass seed (luring that month; the surface must be thoroughly pulverised and trodden down firmly. The following is a good mixture, if procurable:— Crested Dog-tail, 21b"s; Festuca tenuifolia, libs; Festuca duruscula, 21bs; Loliuin tenuifolia perenne, 201bs; White clover ,2lbs; Trifolium minor, 81bs; Poa Nemoralis and Sempervirens libs of eacli. This mixture will uflice for half an acre, and__will form a very good lawn, and if kept cnt close answers most soils. Special mixtures for laying down lawns may also bo nad from any seedsman. Some of our native poas and other grasses would answer admirably for lawn purposes. 1 f the ground is of a retentive nature, sowing the seeds should be deferred till August. Commence to cut as soon as the machine will act. Some ireler the scythe for the first time of cutting. Roll previous to mowing; this will save the knives ot the mower.
