Engineer's Report, »__ At the meeting of tho Horowhonua County Council to-day the following report was submitted by the County Engineer (Mr J. Malcolm) Te Horo Riding. The laying of the maintenance metal in this riding is now completed for the present. There will be more needed very soon round Te Horo but this can be done with the local drays. The 'bridge over the Mangaone stream was finished very -satisfactorily about ten days after the tender was accepted. I have got a list of "thirds" available for expenditure on the Man-gaone-Riki road. i have sent forward a scheme for tho expenditure that if approved will place at our disposal about £70. This, with our own vote, should do a deal towards the improvement of the road. 1 have had the Ngara road extension levelled nip and •e-patched. The main road culvert for the crossing of the south drain at L'aetawa will have to be replaced with 24in. pipes.at once. Tho roadman reports that he is* afraid of a collapse at any time. • Otaki Riding. The work of laying the metal in this riding is now in full swing; if the weather keeps fine it will be finished about the middle of the week. Before the metalling began the surfacemen did some good work widening the main road near Manakau; if the weather continues fine 1 propose to keep on at the widening when the metalling is finished. i intended repairing the northern end of this riding with crushed .'metal, but I have now come to the conclusion that the job is not big enough to warrant the expense of moving the plant. I will, therefore, sail for tenders to be in at next mieeting for sufficient river-bed metal to patch it up for this year. I hope there will bo no overbndge to provide 'or next year. Wirokiiio Riding. Most of the roads in the southern 2nd of this riding are in fair order; [i little maintenance metal will be required on the Miihunoa \>est road- to keep it passable ii the weather breaks. The stone-crushing will be finished for the present early next week as the expense is too great. 1 propose to hold the work over to the spring when the Jays are longer. The approaches to the Wirokino bridge are now widened out each side and I am getting the fences re-ereeted. I have widened between the fences eight or ten feet over nil. The men are now widening the bad point of the road below Mr Symonds' place; it will be finished in two or three days. I have had the Koputa10a to Foxton. road reformed; it is in capital order for metalling. 1 propose reforming the road into Totara Station; it is only a small job and I do not see thatlcan do anything else withit. The metalling of Potts' road wild go on as soon as the stone-crusher stops.' Two tenders were received for this work, and as Mr Tippler, of Shannon, was the lowest and in order his tender was accepted, the price being Ss lid per yard. The tender of Messrs Banks and Co. was accepted for the instruction of the drain, _etc., in Section XI B 41, Horowhenua, and they are now going on with tho work. Tokoma/ru Riding. In this riding the roads are now better than they have been for years; the 'work done 'by the grader is more apparent hcre.than it is in any of the atlier n'idings. The great growth of all fescue which has been disposed of lias .much improved the road; not only ' its appearance but it gives so much more room for traffic. The laying of the maintenance metal in the Shannon end of the riding is getting on well, and is nearly finished. The contractor at the Tokomaru end has now got a good start, and will ,if the weather is not too bad finish the job during , ihe month. The repairs to the bridge ' at Southec's has been earned out, and ' the rotten bridge on tho Kingston road has been replaced with. 42 inch pipes uwl the opening filled up. A superstructure has been put on a 12-foot span bridge by Mr Judd's which was foiuid to be very rotten when the inspection was made. General. The inspection of the principal bridges in the county has been carried out as . iirected, and lam pleased to say many ' of them turned out better than expected. I will have, more to say on this ' matter next meeting, as there is one or two in the Tokomaru riding that 1 ivaht to inspect further.
