Levin Borough Council

The fortnightly meeting of the Levin Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr 8.-R. Gardener), Councillors M. Fosella, E. M. llerrick, J. Harvey, T. G. Vincent, S. Jones, J. Robertson, A. Dempsey, C. Blehkliorn. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor France, who met with a serious accident, and it also was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to him. GAS .MANAGER'S REPORT,

Tlu' following report tor this month ending 20th May was submitted by the gas manager: "J am pleased to say that matters in connection with the department continue to show a steady forward movement. The output of gas during last month shows an increase of over 20,000 cubic feet as compared ■with the corresponding month of last year. The plant is keeping ill good working condition and giving good results. Our colt«. as usual is meet with a ready sale and is marketed as soon as manufactured. A fair amount of gas fitting has been done since my previous report was submitted to you, and a number of gas fires fixed; we have others to instal at- soon as we can get them to hand. I am pleased to say that we still are able to procure goods usually required, but owing to risks, etc., occasioned by tho war, prices generally are a little higher, which I suppose must be expected under the circuimstnees."

The rejiort was adopted. LIGHTING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The lighting committee met on tho 4th inst., and dealt with the various applications for now lamps which had been referred to the committee by the council. In respect to the application from residents in Queenswood-road and neighbourhood, for three lamps, after discussion it was decided to recommend to the council that for the present one lamp only do erected, and that the position for the same be at the junction of Queenswood road and Kawiu road. Mrs Driver's application for a lamp to be reinstated at the corner of Bristol and Stanley-streets also was considered. In view of thenearness of the police station and the Courthouse, and also the close proximity of a public hall it was decided to recommend to tho Council that the application be granted. The report wa.s adopted. FOR FOOTBALLERS ONLY. It will soon be the season for football and therefore the season for Chamberlain's Pain Balm—that goes without saying.
