The meat packers complain that the War Office is turning down all Australian tenders for tinned meat without giving any reason, while placing huge orders with the Argentine and the United States where the packers" prices are higher than the Australians are willing to accept. They point out that as they are debarred from seiifttng their meat outside the 'British Enipire and unless tHe position quickly alters the packers will he compelled to close down. STRIKE SETTLED. The -glassworks' management has arranged for the resumption of work with the employees who struck against the employment of Germans. FIRE ON/A STEAMER. A fire occurred in the lower hold of the steamer Suevic which is lying at the wharf. There was only slight damage. The 'facts indicate incendiarism. POLICEWOMEN. The Government is appointing two policewomen, chiefly for the protection of girls and women. If their services prove satisfactory further similar apopintments will be made. A NEW MINISTRY. As the result of a conference between the Government and meat exporters the price of meat locally has been reducetl."- The exports for ,a time will be restricted. When tho present contract for the supply of the Imperial authorities is completed a revised scale of prices will be submitted
