* * Tlie Chronicle will not be published on Thursday next—the King's Birthday.

Colonel Chaytbr of the .New Zealand staff at the Dardanelles is dangerously ill.

Hoiowhenua County Council is considering the advisableuess oi obtaining a mo Lor car for the use ol the County Engineer. The proposal was discussed at Saturday's meeting, and decision deferred. The duties and travels of the engineer are so widespread that lie rinds it necessary to keep three horses, and the cost of doing so is very heavy under the present condition of the feed market; the actual cost ol their upkeep running to £10 per month. Quite apart from this, there is the consideration of more rapid transit, which a car could give. This would result in the council obtaining a much better overseeing of its works, and a more extensive inspection of is great length of main roads, as well as branch lines of communication.
