Decrease at beginning of first and end of third needles, knit 6 rowe, decrease again, knit till leg measures 11 J in. Heel.—Knit 14, turn, purl 14 and 14 stitches from third needle, putting remaining 28 stitches on two needlee till required for instep. Slip 1 knit Ito end of 28 stitches. Turn, purl back 28 stitches. Repeat these two rowe 14 times. To Turn Heel—Knit 14 stitches, Knit 2 together, knit 1. Turn, purl 2 stitches, purl 2 together, pud 1. Repeat, knitting one more stitch each row and , taking the 2 stitches at the gap together and knit 1 more, till 14 stitches are left. Pick up 15 stitches on either side of heel, adding 2 stitches from each end of instep needle, avoiding hole. Decrease in every other row at end of first and beginning of third needle till 56 stitches altogether are left. Knit plain, allowing about 2in for toe. Toe.— Knit 5. decrease, repeat to end of row, k»it 5 rows; knit 4 decrease, repeat to end of row, knit 4 rows; knit 3, decrease, repeat to end of row, knit 3 rowe; knit 2 decrease, repeat to end of row, knit 2 tows; knit 1, decrease ,repeat to end of row, knit 1 row. Draw remaining stitches together with wool-needle, and finish off .firmly and smoothly. A good way of fin- [ ishing off can be learned at the depot. '.Socks are required in 10, 10J. 11, 11J, :Jl3, and 12J eizea.' Socks to be waeked land pressed.
To finish Toe—Break oB wool, loarmf jB to .10 inches. Divide stitches equally on two needles, 12 on each, 1, jbp|i 1 front needle, pull wool ihtough, 2. knit lon back needle, pull vroo\ thrpugjh and slip off. Re pe»t, off last etitch neatly with ra darning needle. This toe can be done more easily with either a oodkin or darejng needle.
