On Wednesday afternoon Mrs B. R. Gardener met about twenty-five ladies of Shannon in the Mechanics' Institute and explained the proposals for ine Queen Carnival in Wellington. Those present formed themselves into a committee for the furtherance of the object. Mrs -Tilling was chosen secretary. On Monday next Mrs C. B. .Robinson will give a monster garden party in her grounds at Buckley; there will be competitions and musical items and a charge of Is will be made for admission. Flowers and sweets will be on sale and a motor car will he running to and fro all the afternoon. On Saturday Mrs Fitchett and Mrs Merivood are organising a flower day—selling flowers in the streets. At a later date Mrs Mitchell will give a garden party. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Gardener lor her visit and addreoa.
PATRIOTIC) SOCIETY. A meeting of the combined committees—ladies and gentlemen— which have been formed for the purpose of furthering the objects of the New Zealand Patriotic Society wa6 held in the Mechanics Institute on Wednesday evening. Mr S. W. Carter presided. Mm Butler sent an apology for absence and volunteered her services for any musical functions that might be held. Mr E. Law announced that at a meeting of the Shannon Dairy Co. directors that day it had been decided to vote £<25 for this cause. Mrs Robinson and Miss Laurvig stated what had been done by the ladies' committee. It was resolved on the motion of Mr G. N. Stephenson that Professor Cardston's offer to bring a concert party to Shannon on Monday nest be accepted. A sub-committee was appointed to look after entertainments. Mr Alloway suggested that a costume football match be held and the Football Club communicated with on the subject.. Mr Carter seconded this and it was agreed to. The chairman, secretary and Messrs Law and Alloway were appointed a sub-committee to carry out the idea. Messrs Stephenson, Warring-Taylor, C. and E. Law were ohosen as a committee for produce and stock •with power to add to their number. The chairman undertook to graze all the stock and store the produce. Mr Tilling stated that Mrs Jlall was organising concerts and dances for the Red Cross .Fund and it was decided that she should be asked to co-operatc with the combined committee. The following were appointed a dance and cards committee: Mesdames Cole and Tilling, Miss Laurvig, Messrs~R. Law, B- Spencer ,H. Hook and J. Bovis. The books for votes were distributed, and in all 60 books, each worth £1, were disposed. It was resolved that the ballot box be placed at Miss 'Dunckley's, the opening of the ballot boxes to be left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. Mr Stephenson suggested that this month's subscription to the Belgian Fund be given to the Patriotic Fund. The committee ad- : journed till Wednesday next at the ! same time and l place.
