Produce Circular

Ihe JJuuk 0. Sutw Zealand, under date of London, yth April 1915, reports on the JiOiidon markets:

Wool.—The t.iird series o<l sales com. nieneod ou loth, and closed on SJlst ult, having occupied fourteen sittings at a daily average w y,232 bales. lu all there were 120..05 bales catalogued and 18,800 u iilidra ,n. Ol the quantity sold, about i;,C-. 0 bales have been taken for oxpurt, inc. iding a'bout 5,000 bales purchased lor shipment to America. One;.' again the Home trade mustered in considerable Ijrce, and several French aud American buyers were also present. It had geuei ally agreed tiiat with American buyers moie or less out ot the running, value.; for merinos would undoubtedly ease io a level consistent with the position of things in the home market, and this was actually what occurred The chief reason for their inactivity has of COUJ..O been the scarcity of export licence.;, and throughout the sales they bought very sparingly, oonhning their operations cniefly to the very best wools. Ai the opening good merinos were practically unchanged, but heavy and faulty descriptions were o per cent, cheapen aud at the close the latter arc quoted 10 per cent, below the previous sales, rates. Good average lote also finished with some weakness at a decline of about o per cent. Crossbreds went well from start to tinifih, the competition, chiefly, the home trade., being of a very keen nature, and a conspicuous feature of the sales has been the record prices paid for greasy wools. The finer sorts, n<w quoted o per cent dearer, hftye not shown the advance as the medium, and coarse qualities, which at the close were about 10 per cent, above last series. Probably the condition of the wool may have something 'to do with the prices, many of the medium crossbredis clips offered 1 being except, ionally light. Tn this connection we have pleasure in recording the fact that we realised on account of a client Iβ 8d per lb.. for a lot ot greasy .medium crossbred (46s and 48s). which up to the present is a record for this clnse of -wool. Slipes, in short supply, about 5 per cent higher. The onjS* look for merinos a.!iain largely on the action of American bujwa. With better shipping facilities afforded them, no doubt the demand from that quarter would again become a prominent feature of the snips, in which case current fates are likely to be maintained at the ensuing seriee. So long as the war continues, and with the placing of further large army order*, the future of crossbred appears to be a* favourable as ever, and it looks afi If the present high prices will be realised for some time to come..

Dairy Produce.—Butter.--The tone, of the market is quiet, with prices distinctly lower compared to those in our last circular. X<>w Zealand available for immediate delivery in small compass, but further arrivals are ex--pectod to Tie landed shortly. There is, however, no anxiety on the ipart of buyers to eeenre. supplies. -Current

prices:— 132e at 1345, exceptionally 136s per cwt. There has been considerable arrivals of cheese from the Fnited States, which meet with a good demand owing to the relatively low prices accepted (84s at 88s) and thle description competes keenly with-col-onial. Now Zealand whitn is in moderate request 02s at 93s Hd, while coloured ie low at 91e at 92s per e«rt<
