CORRESPONDENCE
I.Oiji cotTespondents' opinions aie their owu ; the responsibility of editorial ones makes sufficient ballast for the editc r's shoulders.! THE 1,AT1.-: ■). li. .ucDONALD. (To the Editor). Dear Sir,—l have just read your appreciative notice ol the late Mr J. 11. MuDonnld. ami feel impelled to add my tribute to tile memory ol a man whose death is such a loss to our district. To-day the largest funeral gathering this coast ever saw, followed his remains to the family burial ground at Hokio. The deep sorrow written on the faces of hundreds of his Maori friends and the sadness evinced by every Kuropeau at that impressive gathering, were equally eloquent of the regard and affection in which he was held by all. Thus passes away one, who in many respects was the finest man on this coast. A man of gracious presence, a courteous, unselfish gentleman, who, notwithstanding his position as head of the oldest family, anil largest landowner .on this coast, was always willing to give his time and' help lo everyone; was approachable .by the poorest and humblest resident, j whether it were a native lad, a v'orki ing man. or a small fanner; and at i the same time was conspicuous for a j dignity and grace of bearing, which I placed him at the head, or made him | the centre ol attraction, in "whatever ' company of our townsmen or settlers he might happen to be present. I I think it oxpivs-'es -Hie feeling of many I in'saying he was one of Mature's supermen, who won admiration and esteem I , without an effort.—Yours, etc., I W. u. ADKIN. j Levin. May 22nd.
