[per Pit ESS ASSOCIATION. J DEAD AT W. New Fly mouth, This Day. David Smale, who arrived at Xow Plymouth in 1841, and assisted in surveying the town, was lound dead in bed thits morning. He was i)" 2 years of age but was quite active to the last. The funeral of the late .1. R. MeDor.ald, on Saturday, was attended by ttlers .from Wellington, Otaki, Porirua, Shannon, Manakau, and bevin. The cortege was over half a mile in length and the floral tributes of grateful remem- j brance wore numerous and beautiful. A service was held in the Catholic Church, Levin, the Rev. father Henri I officiating. The service was an impress- | sive one. In an exhortation given to j the mourners Father Melu spoke in ap- \ preciative terms of the departed one. ' making sepeial reference to Mr Mv- \ Donald's uniformly kind and Jieipful j consideration for the .Maoris. The 'musical parts of the service were sung I feelingly by the choir, Professor Chafer ] accompanying on the organ. Tho , cortege moved on to Hokio immediately the service was over, and the inter- | ment was made at the private cemetery of the McDonald family. The Maoris ; of the locality gave a funeral banquet to all mourners, and speeches of welcome wore delivered by Here Nicholson, Grace Royal and Albert Te Hiwi. j Replies were made by Mr R. A. McDonald and Mr T. Bevan.
