Aii endeavour is to bo made to establish a racing club in Levin, and a ; meeting is to be held next Friday ! evening, in the Town Hall, to discuss .ii! matter. The Horowhenuu Park Company is willing to give the new club a tree hand in managing it*> own affairs, and there seems every prospect of racing being re-established in Levin on a, permanent and satisfactory basis how that the totalisator permit has been restored to the town. The Horowlieiiua County Council paid a total of £25 last year for email birds' eggs. There were five who guessed correctly the name of the English general for which the dolls' furniture suite made by Lily and Carl FrecMling was the prize. On a draw *being iiiade the lucky winner proved to be Mies Maieic Collier, of Weraroa. Colonel Porter has been making enquiries of Mr Field, M.P., as to the position of the National Keserve Corps in Levin. It is likely that the colonel will pay a visit to this town shortly and endeavour to quicken local interest in the reserve, ihere is need lor such help. " , A letter received by the secretary (G. Dawson) of the Levin branch of the V.M.C.A. from Mr A. Tarney, general secretary, etatee that the Y.M.C.A hall just erected at Trentham training camp, and with accommodation for 1200, in addition to the reading room, writing room, library (75 x 15) and officers' room .will be opened offici illy by the Prime Minister on Thursday next. A letter was received from the Town Clerk of Devonport, Auckland, by the Levin Borough Council last night. The letter stated that the Devonport Borough Council unanimously had passed the following resolution: "That the Government be urged strongly to remove the restrictions governing the fishing industry to enable fish to be purchased at a reasonable rate." The support of the Levin Borough Council was solicited in the matter. Councillors did not seem to know what restrictions were referred to and the letter was merely received. At the HorowLenua Fruitgrowers Association meeting on Friday evening, Mv 10. M. Horrick told those present that lie had found Pahnereton North a splendid market for vegetables of all kinds; it often was better even that the AVellington market. He also had received orders for vegetables from ae far north as Taumarunui. Replying to a question for his opinron regarding the best variety of potato for this district Mr Herrick said that when growing potatoes lor market some years ago be had favoured up-to-date, and if planting again he would plant largely with the same variety. He considered the early globe onion among the best sorts for this district. The waterworks committee of the Levin Borough Council reported to the council last night that it approved of Harvey and Company's application for water for power on tlfeir premises in Oxford-street. The application was agreed to on the terms of the letter covering the application and a charge of £6 per annum ie to be made. The committee's recommendation was endorsed by the council.
The Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Woi-ke, notified tho Levin Borough Council last evening, that its representation re the completion of the Auckland-Wellington main arterial road would receive due consideration. The rise in the cost of horse-feed and living generally caused Mr G. Astridge to write to the Levin Borough Council asking for an increase in salary. At 1 the council's meeting last evening the application was referred, on the motion of the Mayor, to the joint consideration of the finance and sanitation committees. Three tenders were received by the Levin Borough Council for tho erection of the new firebell and tower—£ll", £10 10s and £9 15s 6d. The latter tender was sent in .by Mr J. Milnes and was accepted. Tho Mayor stated that the work of erection probably would be completed this week, and in the meantime Mr J. McTaggart had been appointed watchman. . " The Mayor, Mr B. 11. Councillor Blenkhorn seconded the motion, which was carried by the councillors standing. Councillor France, whose son is among those wounded returned thanks to the council for its expression of sympathy. The sanitation committee of the-. Levin Borough Council reported to the council last night that the council had no power to interfere with tho proposed building of pig yards by the auctioneering firms near Mrs M. E. Thompson'* section adjoining the saleyards, unless a nuisance was caused thereby. ■Similar advice was received from the Health Department. The latter stated that the floor would be raised well above the ground and tho ground would bo concreted in order that the place can be kept celan.
