Ho was only ninteon yearn of age. and went to the front with the 3rd Keinlorcoments. "Ife was a fine hoy, and a great help to me, and T did not want him to go." said Mr Mardell to an Auckland "Star" reporter. "Jn fact, T refused to give him permission because he was not yot twenty-one years of age, hut he was awfully keen to go and his reply was: "When you wore my age. Dnd. von fought in the Dardanelles. Now you are too old to go. ['in the right age. You call yourself a Britisher, and you won't let nte go now." So T gave niv consent." added Mr Mardell, "and the hoy went. His mother is dead.
