SCHOOL COMMITTEE,
At the meeting of tlie School Committee iield on Monday evening Mr •I. Richardson presided and there was i good attendance of members. The iiead teacher, Mr W. Voysey, pointed 'it in his report there were 272 chil■lren oji the roll and of these 251 put in an appearance that day. This is the highest attendance this quarter, .ni l if it could be maintained for the ■est of the year the school would bo ■utitled to an increase in the staff-of leaehers. It was decided to write to lie Board stating that the committee yere anxiously waiting for information as to the acceptance of tenders <>r asphalting. It was stated at the •leeting that there were many children •f school age who could attend school »nd did not, and it is intended to notify (lie Truant Officer with a view to proeedings being taken. On Monday Master Eric Martin, • nn °f the Postmaster had the misfor'ine to break his arm. He wa6 thrown fl a horse and the animal stepped on ■lira. Ihe little sufferer was taken " Levin by the evening train for auri L-al treatment. A goods train on Friday night ran >ver a home near the Miranui mill. I'lie animal was killed. The announcement of Mr Hugh Hall's leath came as a shock to his many riends in Shannon, many expressions '1 sympathy were to be heard hero, >nd the Shannon Druids were invited ■y telegram by Mr ii. R. Gardener to '<• present at the funeral. HOOKEY. A combined meeting of the Shannon ind Moutoa Hockey Clubs was held (111 Friday evening, Mr Bovis being n the chair. It was decided to com- : '"i° this season, the name of the lijb to be "The United." This move '••hould further hockey interests and ' «lp us to retain the cup in th® district. Mr George Gray, who was the first lostmaster in Shannon about 27 years •■so. died at Wellington on Friday. •Ir Gray was a native of Foxton and v as one of the oldest settlers on the coast.
