Turner gave evidence that when approaching the danger zono the boats were swung out and the bulkhead doors closed. The steamer slowed down, fifteen knots being the fastest speed, owing to haze. She received wireless messages, including a warning that a submarine was off the Irish Coast. She carried out special instruction. Witness saw the wake of the torpedo almost on the surface. There was ;i second explosion T>ut it might have been causeu by internal force. Smoke and steam rose between the third and fourth funnels. He ordered the boats to be lowered to the rails and the women and children placed aboard; also he ordered the enpn'nes to be stopped, but they were out of commission. A verdict of wilfuT and wholesale murder was returned against the Kaiser, the German Government and the submarine crew. THE AMERICAN MEAT TRUST.
The "Premiers' Conference discussed the question of the American meat trust and resolved that step« be taken to watch the operations of the meat companies in Queensland, also that the Royal Commission which enquired into the subject be approached by the Governments interested with a view to formulating a scheme of action.

An important prosecution under the recent Defence of India Act is problessing at Lahore against eighty-two persons, alleged to have indulged in a .seditious conspiracy against tlie British Government. It wa.s engineered by Indians returning from America, file origin of the conspiracy was found in a movement on the Pacific Coast directed by Sai Dval. it was hoped that the Administration would be ■weakened by the war and emissaries I returned to India in considerable mimber.s and endeavoured to stir up trouble, mainly in the Punjaub and United Provinces. They sought to collect arms and explosives, circulate seditious literature, tamper with the troops, obtain funds by robberies and a series of dacoities and murders were to have taken place. Owing to the vigilance of the police and the co-oper-ation of the people seizures of bombs were made, plans detected and the rigleaders detected. Several of those implicated made a full confession /of the plot which failed. At the very beginning tho plotters failed to -win the sympathy of their own people in Tndia. though they got a, majority of Sikhs. The Government had every assistance from the Sikh leaders ,who keenly resented the discreditable proceedings. and the atternps to persuade the Mahomedans to join the revolt.
