Patriotic Maoris

RAISING A NEW ZEALAND AVAR. FUND. . : - |

The Maoris of -Uauakau (Horowhenua County) have organised - a patrU otic movement that is sure to have a far-reaching effect. The idea originated with Mr R. Ransfield, of Manakau, w ] ]o convened a meeting that was attended by a gathering representative o fthe Maoris of "Sne whole county. Mr Ransfield addressed the meeting and' explained that although the natives already had subscribed largely to the patriotic funds they were desirous of giving further assistance, and to make it in a way that would be distinctive To this end it was proposed to organise a fund that would be Known as the Maoris' Patriotic Fund. -

Mr Ransfield's suggestion was favourably spoken of by natives represen tative of Waikanae, Otaki, Ohau, Foxton and Kereru.

Mr Hira Parata warmly endorsed the proposal. He ha<f' subscribed rigfe. through the war, ho said, as had*many other natives, but he thought the Maoris now- should raise a Tun*! o| their own and contribute to it %hht\ ally. ■•» r " *

Mr McMillan (Koputaroa) said Weie" should be a committee set up to work the county. He was strongly in favour of Mr Ransfield's proposal, and would help it all he could.

It was stated during the proceedings that large areas of potatoes had -'been' planted by the Maoris for the purpose, of celling them to raise money for the war funds. They were ready for gale now, and would be" marketed forthwith. .•.•;.-.. • -■• i The holding of concerts and dances in Otaki, Levin, Foxton. Wnikannr, and other centres, the proceeds to le devoted to tho funds, as favourably discussed, and ' resolved upon. Details will be arranged at a meeting to be held next week.

It is hoped that the movcinent.will: be extended so as to make the war fund representative of the whole *f the : Maoris of New Zealand.
