CARNIVAL.
The New Zealand Patriotic Society .recently formed in Wellington is about to hold a carnival in V> ellington for .[ the purpose of raising funds to aid New Zealand soldiers who may return incapacitated, and to aid their de- ,., . pendents. The Society is working to ..'. ■ get the district® in the province to join in the carnival and to that end Professor Oardston and Mr H. G. Hill, . ~ secretary to the Society, visited Levin yesterday afternoon and addressed a meeting of ladies in the Council Chambers, called by the Mayoress, Mrs B. R. Gardener. There was a good attendance and Mrs Gardener presided. .. ■ Mr H. G. Hill, in explaining the ob- ,. . jeets of the Society, and the arrange- ...... ments made so far in connection with ,-.- ,the-proposed carnival, said that it was .*. . intended to devote 75 per cent of the 4 . proceeds to make provision for incapac- %,'... .. ifcated soldiers and their dependents ,]■•' and <the other 25 per cent to be set ( , :. the Red Cross ambulance at ,';'.- Itthftipnut. . TJiey had .an absolute *„.,,, dutj?. falling on them to. provide for / at present and for their „■. ■' dependents. People here could not realise ~,.;..-.,whatwari«eant as those in European .: »lOonntries, and it was- obligatory upon ... -them ! to do all thisy could for the men at'the front fighting their battles. The meeting held in Wellington to inaugu- ..; rate the carnival was a most- enthusi- .. • aetic one and the Prime Minister had ~ y agreed to be patron of the movement. The Government had offered to frank ....„ all letters and telegrams in connection \i with the carnival. The proprietors of •' the Wellington picture theatres had , offered to take moving pictures of the carnival free of charge, and exhibit them in the theatres and hand over .- . .th whole takings to the funds. The time was opportune now to take the needful steps and in Professor Cardston, as organiser, they had just the man they wanted. Representative men of Wellington would be appointed, trustees of the fund. ( ..__. . t Professor Oardston said it had come to their knowledge that certain articles .of clothing, such as pyjamas, were hardly needed by the wounded at the .Dardanelles, and the time had now come when they must look after themselves. In Christchurch poverty was ~, keen, especially at Sydenham, and! ,n thit showed6how serious things are, ~ » and -how desirable it is to start at once ~,- and make provision for the future. He suggested that the best way the district could help would be for it to provide n refreshment tent at the carnival. The carnival committee would supply the tent and the furnishings if the district would supply the foodstuffs needed. .. : He, also suggested that the district .nominate a candidate for the "Queen of the Carnival" competition. The Wellington committee would give a concert at Levin; all the proceeds to be credited to the district candidate. Other districts had collected live stock of all descriptions, and if this district i . did the same, the aniount received from the sale of this stock would be credited ■ to the district candidate. The nomi'"natiqrie for the "Queen of the Carnival", competition would be closed on *' Tuesday next, and the carnival would • '' be held on Juno 3rd in Newtown Park. Regarding the refreshment tent the Wellington committee would provide the waitresses if necessary. After some discussion it waa decided to nominate Miss J. McKegg as district " candidate for the.' r Queen of Carnival" competition. ' : It was agreed to hold a Manawatu ' tSroduce stall and a tea room at the carnival at Wellington and the follow- : ihg epmmittee was set up to canvass ""•"the district for assistance: Mesdames Gardener, Goldsmith, Wh'taker, Walk- * er (Waikanae), Kebbell. Merrick, Cork. •' Robert Bevan (Manakau), Milne, W. -•' ; MoK«gg (Otaki), Misses Whitaker, Cork, MoLeavey and Bowen. with power to add. Mrs Guy Kingdon was appointed secretary to the tea room committee. Mr HiJl thanked the Mayoress and ladies at the meeting for their attendance and the assistance they had offered!.
