The committee had had design* aiid'quota-." tions submitted by a local firm, and had also sought the assistance and advice of one or two leading artists, and after mature consideration of all circmnstances, unanimously recommended that Lady Scott's offer ol a replica in, bronze of the figure of Captain Scott be accepted, and further, that sbo "be asked to prepare designs for a fsuitable pedestal with has reliefs in bronze, of Captain Scott's four companions, and if possible, in addition, two • typical scenes, and a space for Captau Scott's final message, the memorial to be erected on the site already approved bythe committee, on the reserve opposite the City Council Chambers. The Mayor said that Lady Scott could not design the figure satisfactorily without also designing the base. •Mr Herdman Smith had recommended,,, that the work of designing both .should be entrusted to Lady Scott, as if she did the statute and someone else the pedestal, it would be difficultV'-to ,; j|et# tho two parts to harmonise.- -ff % ft was resolved on the motion of f)r Chilton ,that the report liondoptctrfor"* presentation to a general meeting of subscribers to the fund. Tt was decided that a general meeting of the subscribers to the fund should be called immediately.
