The Chronicle PUBLISHED DAILY. LEVIN. FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1915. THE WEEKLY HALFHOLIDAY.

- Diuit'diu City. Wellington City. Karori Borough and John.sonville Town District all have given a vote for Saturday as the statutory day for the weekly half-holiday. Chrifitchufch City has reaffirmed its previous decision to have the half-holiday on Saturday rather than on AVednesday. Gradually there is coming into wider operation the principle of week-end halfholidays rather than the mid-week half holiday. Twenty years age- there was a determined opposition against even Wednesday half-holiday, but as year .succeeded year this died away, till at last the employers became solid in their support of what in its initial stages was regarded as a dangerous experiment. The original fear was based on a doubt of the truism that retail trade can be done as well in live and a-half days as in six. and there evidently has grown up in later days an opinion that no other day than .Saturday can equal Saturday for trading purposes. Until this year there lias been in Wellington a majority against any change from AVednesday. but this week's poll has disclosed 'a preponderance of several hundred people in favour of a change to Satin--, day. On many grounds Saturday seems to suit the bulk of the public. 'Nt to shopkeepers (who should know then; own business best), though dividi' 1 in Wellington, maintain a ■•-ajority in favour of Wednesday or hnroclny. And. in fact, there hare I'een some instances where country towns have gone T.aelc to AYednesdav .-s the day after bavins given twelve I'iontliß' trial to Saturday. In this -espect a great deal depends upon the point of v,W as to the public interest and the traders. P ast . experience has shown that in all these cases ' there ,s a natural disposition that i r'Rhte matters eventually, though in- > dividual eases of hardship occur in- ! evitablv. ,
