England last nearly half of her total troops in the action: i.e.. 50.000 out of 120.000. The Germans lost 375,000 and the Belgians 70,000. Tll this one battle the losses were as great as the total losses in the whole of the Anipriean Civil War, which was reckoned the most deadly war of modem times.
