THE SOLDIERS' FAREWELL.
j The men of the Wellington Sixth J Mounted Regiment have spent their hist night wider canvas at their training camp lor this year on the Levin racecourse. To-day the main body is returning home—only a fatigue party being left behind to strike the tente, attend to the baggage and reetore the ground to its former state. Now that the eneampment is over it can be said safely that it has been a success. The weather has remained I fine, the appointments and management of the camp wore excellent and, most important of all. the behaviour of the men has been most exemplary. Their conduct in camp is vouched for by their commanding officer. Major Samuels, and their conduct on leave is vouched for by the people of Levin. During the fortnight' the men have been camped here they gave no caiwn for anyone to take exception and it is with genuine feelings of regret thffr the people here sec their departure-. The residents trust tfiat when the next annual camps are fixed the Sixth Mounted Regiment will be sent here. If they return they will be given what their deportment on this occasion .entitles them to—a hearty welcome, an.' what has been done this time to .in'nko their period of annual training a.pleasant time, will 1 )0 done again. Last night, the final one in camp, a camp concert was given by the men to the people of Levin. A large camp fire was built in front of the grandstand which was occupied by the audience of soldiers and people from town. The prizes won at the military sports on Wednesday were, presented by Mre I!. .11. Gardener. The Mayor, in a brief address, epoke in appreciative terms of the excellent conduct of the men. ~e said they had been favoured with fine weather throughout and the site of the camp was a good one. He hoped there would be further camps here. The people would be glad to have any regiment come, but would be pleased specially to have the Sixth Mounted Regiment back again. Mis Gardener also • complimented the men on their conduct and then presentCiio prizes. -uujui- samucte, 0.0., in returning L.i.uiKs, (said that lie was proud to be hi command oi the Sixth Mounted ucgiiueiit when lie came here, and after tke last lortniglit lie was prouder .sciil. He thanked the people of Levin lor their liiuduesa and hospitality. The • iiiuii had come to camp to work, but they also deserved a iiuie recreation. ihey had been always at "sciieir posts when duty called ffiem. They were living in strenuous times, and if it came that they Here wanted lor further service they would be willing ancT ready Lo go. The men ware leaving the camp with regret. On behaff of the regiment lie thanked the peop'e of Levin. At the call of Major Samuels the m.ii gave three hearty ciieers for the i esideuts here, and three cheers for tlu> Mayor. Three cheers also were given for M:\jor Samuels. After the concert at the- invitation ofc Major Samuels, on behalf of the officers and men of the Regiment, the nsitors to the camp adjourned to the >fficers' mess where an excellent sup:xt was set out, and highly appreciatxl.
