■ At the I'almerston North races yesterday the principal race. the Manawntu Stakes of <500 sovereigns was won l>,v Emperador (9.7) in 1.14. At 9 o'clock last night J. J. Craig's Ltd. stable in George's' Jiay Road. Auckland, untight lire. -The lofts were full ol hay and straw and the flames spread so rapidly that out of ■jOO horses in the stables. only three were saved. The horses were valued aL an average of £40 each. in addition many lorries and much equipment was destroyed. The stable was a new building, harel.v completed, 290 foot by 120 feet. The loss is estimated as follows: Horses £12.000, buildings £7000 fodders, carts and harness £6500: electric equipment .-PI000: total £20,•">OO. The insurances are not obtainable.—Association. Capital progress is being made by t'lie contractor for tKe erection of five shops in the main street at Otaki, for Mr "R. Hannah. The buildings will be <|iiite an acquisition to the business portion of the town. Tlic framework of the new vicarage at Otaki is now in position. The "building will be large, commodious and iiandsomo in appearance. Word has been received by Major G. M.
