THE PETER DAWSON CONCERT
The i'eUT Dawson Concert Company wan greeted by a large and enthusiastic audience at tiie King's lheatre, Levin last night. The quality of the concert ivas liigli and the range oi subjects chosen was ''from grave to gay, l'i-om lively to severe.' : In the "Prologue'' song from Leoncavallo's "Pagliaeei 1 ' -Mr Dawson showed a mas terly histrionic sense ats well as a superb vocal quality ; in "The Blue Dragoons'' ami ''The Little Admiral, he infused a martial spirit into his singing that made the blood of his hearers quicken with zeal : with his folk songs he drew tears and laughter b,v turn or together: and in "Mandalay." a new setting of Kipling's verse*, he gave so real an atmosphere to the old soldier's spirit of yearning that the reposefmlregi'etfnl music of the original setting of the words seemed quite inadequate. Mr Dawson is well supported by a com- 1 pany comprising M iss Grace Newman, i Miss Carlien .Tins, and Miss Annottn George. The duets for piano and vio- j 1i 11 played by Miss and Miss Newman were (specially noteworthy lor the , perfect blending of the passages best adapted for double-stopping on the violin. Miss Annottn (!eorge's technical knowledge . and perfect enunciation made her vocal items highly enjoyable. Ardili's "Dream of Home, and Tosti's "Good Tiye." wore her best numbers.
