PROPOSED HOSPITAL DAIRY.
DISCUSSION AT THE BOROUGH
COUNCIL,
The "Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's proposal to acquire I a dairy farm for the supply of milk for , the hospital was submitted to Levin Borough Council, one of the contributing bodies at is meeting on Monday evening. The site suggested is at Mangaroa. It is estimated that the farm "ill cost £8500 ae it is at present, and a further £1000' will be necessary to acquire additional "stock, plant, etc. The annual charges are set down at £1743. Last year the hospital spent £1825 on milk so that the board considers that it would be £82 to the good: Several reports, one from an officer of the Agricultural Department, were received on the suitableness of the sug- - gested site as a dairy farm for the purpose of milk supply.
The Mayor explained that the Minister had at first refused to sanction the proposal but afterward? agreed, providing the board first placed it before the contributing local bodies. Mr Freeman, a member of the Iward and a practical dairyfarmer had expressed the ' opinion that a proposed site at 'Mak-ai-a wa.s better than the Jlangaroa T| site at half the price, and "the milk could I)c> delivered dirtect by motor lorry to the hospital twice a day. From Managaroa there would be all the handling necessary to 'transport the milk to Wellington by rail. It was essential that they get a pure milk supply for Wellington Hospital, but he understood that the proposed site at Maugaroa was not suitable. Cr France said there was no more reason why the Hospital Board should ■'J supply its own milt than it should "a other goods. If this district was made available for the Wellington -1 milk supply the difficulty would be *m settled for all time. They wanted m better railway facilities. This die- "\ trict could not be beaten for the supply of milk. The proposed dairy farm would not be commercial success if run by the board. He moved this council does not favour the proposal to purchase a dairy farm and considers that if better railway transit for milk between the West Coast district »nd Wellington were provided the difficulty of a pure milk supply for the hospital and also Wellington city would be met." Councillor Prouse seconded the motion and it was agreed to.
