A very deplorable "scene" occurred toward/5 the close of the Foxtoii Hoioiigh Council meeting on Monday night in which a coimeillore made use of a most objectionable, obscene and insulting reference to a lellow Councillor. The main business of the meeting had been completed and the Mayor, who is not seeking re-election, thanked Councillors for their assistance during the time he had occupied the Mayoral chair. Councillor CTirystall, in a brief speech, made eulogistic references to the manner in which Mr Stiles had conducted the business of the borough in the past, and in doing so. mentioned that he was a candidate on this occasion for the Mayoral chair. He said he would prefer not to be returned unopposed and in the event of a contest would like his opponent to be one of the men associated with him a.s Councillors, i\n he considered i! ■• ,i.- an office to which Councillor* should a^pirr , ■vAftvr other Councillors had appreciation of the retiring fty&Op'r-, connection with the Council. Councillor Coley rose and void ho was sorry Mr Stiles wan going to Mtand down. As far as Councillor ChrvtitaH was concerned, he wouTo , be sorry to see him elected, and if he were elected ho (Councillor Coley) would prefer not to be on the Council as he could not sit with him. The Mayor endeavoured to restrain Councillor Coley but his elWrts were unavailing, Councillor Coley remarking "that Councillor Ohrystal ami three or four of the other men at the table were the thinnest, and most one eided and unfair men he had ever sat with." Councillor Chrystall said it was not fair that Councillor Coley should make a general statement and asked for a specific instance of one-sided or unfair conduct on his part. Councillor Coley, excitedly rising to bis feet and loaning across tlie table, said he would soon give an instance and in a very loud voice accused Councillor Chrystall of cloing bis .utmost to "sack" the previous gas manager ,md of "crawling" to fRe present manager. In making this accusation Councillor Coley liiade use of an obscene term. The Mayor promptly adjourned the meeting temporarily and thus closed a deplorable episode. Foxton Herald.
