LEVIN RECREATION RESERVE

(To the Editor.")

•Sir.—.ln your report of the Borough Council meeting this week Councillor Demspey is reported to have said when he brought uj> the proposed sale <>t the -10 acre reserve near tlie lake that he had been told that the Government intended to sanction the sale of that reserve and to hand tlTe money over to the Horowhenua A. and P. Sociotv to invest in its own name. This is the old trick of setting up a man of straw and then knocking; it down. The A and P. Society have never asked for the money to be handed over to them. What is has asked for is that the ro.sel've should he sold and the proceeds used to acquire land in a more convenient situation. This land would he a domain for the same objects for which the 40 acres wore granted. T wonder that His Worship the Mayor allowed such a statement to be made as from his connection with the Society he must know that it was untrue. Then Councillor D'empsev says the Borough Council .should take steps to see it was not lost to the people. Sir, I must again reiterate what T have already stated throuigh your paper and publicly that this reserve was asked for before Levin was in existence as a racecourso and a showground for an A. and P. Society, and other recreations and sports for the district residents and was granted so that Levin people have no more interest in this reserve than outside residents, say, in the Wirokino riding, of which Levin claims to he the centre. The borough has had a very liberal allowance of reserves given it within its boundaries: the 40 acres are outrode. and it is not satisfied -something like Ahab's greed for Naboth's vineyard. Ts this just to the outside settlors to whom they so frequently appeal for support- in many matters and look for support- in many matters, and look to for support of their town business.—l am, etc, J. ICRBBELL. Tc. Ranawa. Ohau. 9.4.15.
