Entertaining the Troops.
| COMMITTEE MEETING. The Committee set up at the public meeting on Tuesday evening to tate steps to organise entertainmente and sports for the troops during their camp on the racecourse met in the Borough Chambers on l' riday evening. Ihe Mayor (Mr 13. It. Gardener) presided. The names of Miw Ivetxhvell, Mra Goldsmith and Mr K. Aitken were added to the committee. Major Samuel and Major Ashworth M ere present. Major Samuel, who is in charge of the camp, explained the procedure of the sports usually held. One afternoon is set apart for them, generally the day before the camp was struck. He thought the officers and men would gladly 00-operate with the townspeople for so worthy a camse as the Belgian Belief Fund. The sports would ho held on the racecon-rse. He also thought it possible in response to a, request for a football team from the camp to play a local team on the Levin park domain on Saturday, 17th inst., and to fall in with the idea to play a hockey match on the 21st. He emphatically pointed out that the men came here for work, and the sports will have to take place after 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Mis Walker detailed the progress made by the ladies' auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. in providing entertainments, such as concerts, games, et?., at Century Hall every evening. tW Tuesday evening a welcome "social" will lie held. Referring to Mr B. Ling's offer to supply an entertainment on one night, it was decided, if possible, to hold it in the King's Theatre on tTie 20th inst, when an all round charge will bfc made for the Belgian Belief Fund. All the ladies of the present committee. and Messrs Denton. Aitken, Matheson, Dr T>avies and the T?ev. H. T. Stealoy were appoinfed a programme and entertainment committee to work in conjunction with the ladies' auxiliary. The Mayor, Mr IT. Denton and Mr •T. L. C. Merton were appointed a sports committee: and the Mayor, Mr K. Aitken and Mr D. W. Matheson an advertising committee.
