The Suez Canal Battle.

♦ LETTER FROM A LEVIN SOLDIER The following letter has been received by Mis H. Walker of Levin from her son Arthur, wlio is a memfer of the main Expeditionary Force and took part in the battle along the Suez Canal Egypt. Private Walker is in the same company as the Nelson men of whom two wore wounded; in one case the wound proved fatal. The letter is as follows:—"It is some time now since f wrote owing to the fact that we havo been shifted about. All letters leaving here are censored and we are not allowed to mention any dates or the names of any places. We have b&en in one engagement with the Turks ; in this fight two Nelson men were wounded. We were in the trenches with the Indian troops; they are fine fighting men. and beat us all to pieces in skirmishing. Tt was all right shooting it the Turks with our rifles, but when they got. their 18-pounders on to ns, it made us lie low. for a while. One ieliow a few feet away from me. was down out of his trench and covered vith sand, but escaped unhurt. We lad a fairly stiff fight for a while but ;he enemy retreated after about 16 ioips leaving the field thick with dead ind wounded. The Turks killed a few 'nc'ian soldiers besides wounding naiiy."
