Adventures in Africa.
CHtiRMAVSKYS AND NEGIIO TRIBE. Tlio Oherniavskyb are much-travelled artists and the tunny experiences they come ia contact with are necessarily numerous. One of the best stories told by the young artists to a South African journal related to their trip across the AVild Tranaki in South Africa, from liie western district to Durban, by a specially-hired six-in-haud for the purpose of satiating their spirit of adventure. They were held up by a negro tribe. It seems the reputation of the artists had preceded them e,ven to the primitive Kaffirs, and tin- chief of the tribe in question good-huniouredly detained the musical cavalcade and demanded the magic music of the "Macoola Moolong" (the great white meu). The Cherniavskys entered into the spirit of the thing and with a tropical sunset behind the mango trees for a » black doth, an old apology for a piano wa.s dragged out of the chief's kraal and the black sens of the soil listened to the magic of the music. Whether it was the inspiring sunset or the spontaneity of the proceedings the Clieruiavskys have not yet discovered, but strange to e;ty they played as they had seldom played before: and as for the response of the black race to the chartn of the music it was wonderful. "Never tell me again," -remarked one of the party, "that the black man has no " soul; he is all soul before he comes in contact with the- grosser part of civilisation.'' The Cherniavekye Appear in Levin on Wednesday, March 31. judging b T the enthusiasm arouse.'itiw are sure to have a packed' house. *
