NEW ZEALAND AND OULI URL WUA'I. IT MEANS.

Tho followmg is ono of Mr Edio's epistles published jn tho Auckland daily papcis"Tlus time is perhaps propritioiis whilst the cultuie of vaiious nations is under discussion, to give an impulse to the refining influence of this country. Possibly there are many people who tiont care a rap about culture, but this only because they do not understand' what it stands for. No person can possibly be a patriot unless he is prepared to do all in his power to stimulate and develop national culture for it only by culture that progress is made possible. The industries, the crafts, the army, the navy, and every kind of organisation is enriched by the nation's culture. What are the means whereby culture is attained? Art, music, religion and intellectual pursuits. Either of these bodies of knowledge when promulgated assists in refining the minds of people. Refinement is culture. The refined mind can respond much mole quickly to the com pies propositions which arc to bo daily met with in all walks of life. The cultured mind has a keen mental perception which is denied tho coarse mind. Music is probably tho greatest quickener of the mind and the shortest cut to culture, for its inspiration is a power that is simply wonderful in its refining influences. Now it stands to reason that everyone who lias the wellbeing of this country at heart should do everything to encourage the development of music. A great opportunity is at hand; let us grasp it. Leo, Jan and Mischel Cherniavsky ,the brilliant young violinist, pianist and 'cellist will be amongst us shortly. Let every parent make it possible for the children to hear the artists and ahove all let every adult make an effort to he present at a Cherniavsky concert., and bask in tho refining influence of their wonderful music."

The Russian artists will play the National Anthem of the Allies at the end of the concert. Tho plan opens at Ken Aitken's on the 21th inst: but country patrons can write for seats at once and they will be allotted immediately the plan opens.
