Horowhenua County Council Correspondence.
MONTHLY MEETING
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Horowheuua County Council is being held to-day in the Council Chambers, tin , chaiViuan (Councillor Watson) presiding. A request was received from Mr C. Bhiikhorn. on behalf of Messrs Roe and Bartholomew, that the seal of the council- be placed on the subdivisional plan of part 3D No. 2 Horowhenua Block, signifying the Council's approval of the road shown thereon. The road is upt yet formed or metalled, but it was submitted that if Messrs Roe and Bartholomew deposit a cheque lor the estimated cost -foi' it« formation and give the Coinicil a written guarantee if called on it would be justified in according to the request. Dr Valintine, , Inspector-General of Hospitals, wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council's resolution to pay no more hospital levies and regretting the Council's decision. He added' "1 have no doubt your Council is fully conversant with -the law on the subject." An official acknowledgment of the resolution was received also From the Hospital Board. The Levin Borough Council notified that it could not endorse the Council's resolution not to pay further hospital levies. to the same effect was received from the Otaki Town Board. and .suggesting that action be taken to obtain the desired end through Parliament. Mr J. W. ißoulton, of Matiakau. offered to lease enough land at'Manakau for a pound, fence it at the Council's expense and kike charge of it. A bridge over the Ohau on the Gladstone i'«ad « :ls asked tor by Messrs L. V. Kay and W. G. Adkin. According- to a communication received from Mr J. Hallain, of Shannon, horse-drawn vehicles, bicycles and motor cars travel through the township without lights. Stout-street seemed to be a favourite place for "this silly game. At a meeting of tho Runanga. Borough Council'on February 25th. tne following resolution was passed :"■* this borough council registers an Alpha tie protest at the way in which tho foodstuffs of the people of this Dominion are being advanced, and attributed to the war in Europe, and thus increasing the cost of living on those least nb'le to "bear it. And we further call upon the Government to exercise the powers invested in it by regulating the price of common necessities within the bounds of reason which will chock the cupidity of the few and protect the troll-Icing of the whole." The Runangii Council asked the Council i-t, sup;> it the resolution. In 1910 the Council agreed to transfer ;i strip of block Otawhiwhi A and B for the purposes of a road, but this ! was never carried out. The land was then being leased by Mrs Webb who is now exercising her right under the ' leases to purchase it and he-r solicitor. Mr G. TI. Fell, of Wellington, wishes to know whether the Council intends to take the land and airy claims it has : n respect to it. Williams, Hart and Co., financial agents, Wellington, offered to place any large loans for the Council at r, fee of 1 per cent on tho amount of the loan secured. The Public Works Department signified its aproval of th© plans and specifications submitted by the Council for metalling tho western portion of the Hokio Beach road with lt)00 yards (more- or less) of metal at an estimated cost of £300. and stating that the 'inauthorised balance of the role Is £150.
