THE RABBIT INDUSTRY. Sydney, This Day. The Workers' Association sent a deputation to the Hon. G. Black in regard to the low prices in the rabbit industry. It suggested that the Government control and establish freezing works, and that poisoning be abolished and made illegal, as it destroyed useful food. The Hon. G. Black stated that theobjection to the State taking up the meat industry was applicable to rabbits ; drought conditions would interfere with supplies. THE AFTERNOON SHIFT. The delegates of the Board of Colliery Employees' Association unanimously decided to recommend for acceptance tho proprietors' proposals in eomicction with tho afternoon shift. It is anticipated that the men will accept and work will be resumed on Monday. SUPPLEMENTING AUSTRALIA'S WHEAT SUPPLY. Melbourne, This Day. A conference of flourmillers and a Cabinet sub-committee has arrived at an agreement whereby imported wheat will be sold for 7s 8d per bushel, provided that the flour is sold at £16 per ton. This will prevent bread exceeding IV( the 41b loaf. It will cost the Government 8s 2d per bushel to land American wheat, and this will involve a loss of Gd per bushel. (Received This Day 10.40 a.m.) DODGING PUNISHMENT. Melbourne, This Day. Judge Murray i recently sentenced a certain Bernasconi to one year's imprisonment (at Port Moresby) for hanging a native boy to a rafter of a store ifor punishment. Bernasconi demanded to be heard by a jury. Judge -Murray stated a case for the opinion ol the High Court of Australia. Sir William Irvine supported the appeal, contending that under the Federal law Bernasconi was entitled to trial by jury anil therefore he was illegally convicted.
Sir Alexander Peacock has secured seven cargoes of wheat representing 1,300,000 busheds for importation to Victoria.
