Gardener, to consider ways ami means of raising further assistance lor the Belgians, Was held on Thursday night in the Century Hall. •ui apology was received from Mrs \». G. Adkin. The Mayor occupied tho chair and explained that the meeting was called at the request of the public of Levin, aim the ladies' meeting held last Wednesday in the Council Chambers Everyone knew that further funds were required to help the people ot j>elgium. They owed these people a lot ror the manner in which they field uiii'K the enemy and gave Great Bri lain and r-'ranee time to organise. Many meeting had been held already in Levin to assist them, and some people might think that Levin had been' geu--I'ioiis onough, but in view of the urgent appeal from the Belgian Comm ssion received the other week they must no more in the direction of giving assistance. At the ladies' meeting on Jionday a floral t'oto had been suggested as a means of raising funds. In such a scheme the question of getting sufficient flowers and the likelihood of uad weather had to be considered. A bad day would mean that all their labour would go for nothing. They must consider whethor it was not too late tor a floral fete. Another suggestion was an art union of pictures arid works of art, and some further idea was the making of a street collection. Whatever they decided on doing all would have to work together and make it a success Mrs Gardener suggested that the idea of holding a floral lete be abandoned Tor the present. They could, If necessary, hold one next spring. She considered that an art union should be organised, followed by a concert, at which the prizes won at the art union would, be given to the winners. Mr 11. E. Lodge supported the art union scheme. They should get it &'^y^tW' n n ;etlmtely. A ini>u..n to ask the Government j ■'.or permission to hold an art union, j followed by a concert, as suggested by Mrs Gardener, was carried on a show of hands. Mrs Gardener announced that .Mrs W. H. Field would give a picture towards it. and Mrs C. Collier also stated her intention of giving a pictureMajor Burlinsop said that the boys of the Training Farm would give something for'- a prize and with the staff would do all they could to assist. Mrs Gardener thought a social and dance should be held onee a month for raising funds. They would get help in this way from a lot of *he young people, which they would not got otherwise. —
