SHANNON NOTES.

A special meeting of the School Committee was held on Tuesday evening to recoive reports of the sub-committee re asphalting the school grounds. The chairman, Mr F. T. Linsell, presided. A letter was read from the Education Hoard stating that would proceed with the work, the committee to find the amount subsidised as soon as they could arrange it. it was resolved on the motion of Mr Galloway, seconded by Mr Richardson that the board be informed that the committee has £29 in hand, and tlie committee have done all they can under adverse circumstances in consequence of the war .to raise money, and considering tin- state of the grounds which have b..vii cut- no during the recent building ope rations, the committee hope the board their way to spued the full amount of £70, and that specifications be drawn up and tenders called for immediately. The committee feel strongly that the work i.s of great importance and hope that the board will proceeu' with it at once. A letter from Mr Field, M.1 , ., was read promising to do all he could in the matter. The secretary was instructed to write to .Mr Field thanking him for liis consideration. A unanimous and hearty vote of thanks was paesed to Air Maugham for his generosity in giv- ■ mg a picture show for the benefit of the funds for asphalting tlie school grounds.

BOWLING AND TENNIS. The bowling green and tennis courts presented an animated appearance on Wednesday afternoon. The championship matches were continued. Caiman .incl Butt (21) beat Venn and Voysey (TO). The game was declared finshed on tlie 15th head Hensman and Koach (30) beat Clayton and Gunning (14;. Shankland and Mitchell (40) beat McKenzie and Stephenson (5). On the tennis courts Miss Lauirvig and Miss Knowles played friendly .rnmes with Mrs Picket and Miss Ryan, while Mrs Doidgc and Miss Cotterell indulged in similar contests with Mrs Merwood and Miss Hughes. Mrs ind Miss Knowles provided afternoon ea. On the Saturday previous in the ■liiumpion pairs matches Calm&a and :iutt (26) beat Gibson and Knowles (18). Hcnsniiin and Roacii (29) beat McKenzie anil Stephenson (18). A .riendly game was played between Venn and Gunning (21) who beat Knowles uid Voysey (14). The Wellington battery of artillery who are doing their annual nine days' •narch arrived at Mr P. Oag's farm on Wednesday evening. They marched hrough Shannon on Thursday morning hi their way to Palmerston North. BELGIAN RELIEF FUND. A meeting of persons interested >n loing something more towards sendng further relief to the distressed Belgians was hvld here on Wednesday veiling. There was not a very large :i.ttend;\iice. Mr G. N. Stephenson Aiis voted to the chair, and explained ■ii , object of the meeting. Mr Venn said the meeting was only preliminary one. Mr E. Mr Venn thought they sloiild first i.'ive a public meeting after the meeting of the executive in \Vellington. The chairman thought the meeting >v;ts not sufficiently representative to leal with the matter. He agreed with Mr Venn.

Rev. J. A. McKenzie seconded Mr \'enn's motion. AH should be asked to attend the meeting and do what 11 iey can on the ground of common humanity. The Government could not make contributions so long as the G •*• mans were levying on the jrfelgians. Air Venn's motion was carried. Rev. J. A. Crawford was appointed in act as secretary for the tin.e be , el the motion of Mr Mitchell, secoudh! by Mr Gunning Air Hurray said he thought the meeting should be held as soon as possible as the matter was one of urgency. The Belgians were starring and we .should not wait for the Government to levy a tax. Mr Gunning agreed that the matter should be attended to at once without waiting for the Government to take action. -Mr Tilling suggested a ladies' committee should be formed. ■ Air E. Law moved: "That a. public meeting be called for next Monday week, March 15th, in the Druids Hall." Air Venn seconded the motion and it was carried. It was suggested that a monthly subscription should be called for. Air Waring-Taylor though't that further action should be left t-dithe public meeting. MBc.^ Rev. Crawford moved and M'r Venn seconded : That the Ladies' Committee be askeu to meet and discuss the matter and bring any ideas they have to the public meeting. A list fiT monthly subscriptions was opened up and various amount* promised. Air Venn moved and Mr Murray seconded: That this meeting of Shannon residents and settlers desire to congratulate th° (»jvernment upon thoir action in voting a monthly sum for the relief of tlTo.sr who have been plundered, sacrificed and persecuted for defending the rights and liberties of civilisation, and Rope that such monthly sums will continue so long as there is absolute necessity for thp same, and that if direct contribution is barred the same be utilised to subsidise voluntary subscriptions by at least £ for £ and that a copy of the above be sent to xit. The motion was carried uanimously After some further discission the meeting terminated.
