RELIEF FOR THE BELGIANS.

LEVIN LADIES DECIDE TO RAISE j FURTHER FUNDS. A well-attended meeting of ladies from .Levin and surrounding district was held in the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. The meeting was , called by the Mayoress, Mrs B. R. Gardener, to consider what steps should be taken for the purpose of raising further funds for the relief of the Belgians. Apologies were received from Mrs R Prouse, Mrs Duckworth, Mrs J. •Kebbell, Mrs H. H. Cork, Mrs J. Mc--Lntyre and Mrs A. Reeve. The Mayoress presided and in explaining the objects of the meeting, «aid it was time something was done in response to the appeal made by the I Belgian Commission, a few days ago. j The appeal was confirmed in a cablegram received by the Belgian Consul in Wellington. She considered "t plain enough that the distribution of food in Belgium was in tho hands of the "Belgian Commission. Even if the Germans did get some of the food she i ailed to see how they could let the millions of Belgian people die of starvation. The Foxton people had taken the matter up. She thought that perhaps & social and dance could be held once a month for the purpose of raising funds. On the motion of Mrs W. M. Clark, seconded by Mrs J. Davis, it was decided to organise a floral fete to raise tlie necessary funds. Mrs W. G. Adkin moved' that Levin and district be canvassed regularly once a month for donations to the fund. Mrs Liddle seconded this motion and it was agreed to Mrs P. W. Goldsmith was appointed secretary and treasurer to take charge of the monthly fund. The following ladies decided to give & certain sum every month": —Mesdames B. R. Gardener, D. S. Mackenzie, W. G. Adkin, J. Liddle, J. Prouse, H. E. Lodge, — Bryson, T. G. Vincent, •T. Davis, Hitchings, Frechfcling, J. McLeavey, Chaplin, A. McLeavey, Goldsmith, and Misses Johnson, Page, Sedcole and Stewart. A box will be placed in the Council Chambers and all who are able ire requested to come forward once a month and place what they can afford in the box. The money is to be placed in an envelope with the giver's name on it. It was decided to circularise all the residents in Levin and throughout the district asking each to contribute Is, or more or less, every month.

It was decided to leave the question of purchasing socks and any other underclothing required by Levin men in Egypt in the hands of the secretary. The cost is to be met out of the funds of the Levin Women's Patriotic Fund, providing the committee of the latter fund is agreeable to that course being followed.

A further general meeting to discuss and organise, if thought advisable, the proposed floral fete, or any otfter scheme that may be suggested, will he held on Thursday night at 8 o'clock in the Century Hall. Everyone, including the men, is invited to attend.

All ladies, who are able, are invited to attend at the Council Chambers tomorrow to assist in the work of sending out the circulars, also those who have pyjama coats, which they do not wailu. are requested to send them along.
