The Chronicle hears that an injury was sustained by Private dose, late of Levin, during the recent fight against the Turks in Egypt. He was wounded in the shoulder by a bullet, but stuck to his duty with remarkable fortitude, and did not retire from the field until it was won. The attention of members of the H-orowhenua Ratepayers' Association is called, to a meeting to be held on Wednesday next-, in tho-Druids' Hall, Levin, to discuss important proposals. In addition to the work stall and produce stall at the missionary sale on 10th March, Mrs Hulme, of Otaki, is arranging to have a stall of jlelanesian curios, which will be an extra attraction. Archdeacon and Airs Comins, so long associated with the mission at Norfolk Island, and now residing at iSTiannon, have kindly promised to open the sale. An article on lucerne-growing by means of deep cultivation appears today on page 4. It should be of special interest to local farmers, and to poultryment who realise the great nutriment that is stored in this fodder. An interesting record in ship construction has been established in the iiuildTug at Messrs Cammell Laird and works at Birkenhead of H. M. new light cruiser Caroline. Her keel was laid on January 28, 1914 ; she was launched on September 21 ; and delivered completed on December 17, after •satisfactory trials an December 15. Tho contract date for delivery was May ■21, 1915. Private E. Higiiam. of the Australian Expeditionary Force, in the course "I a letter to his father in Fremantle, --ays: In company with some other Australians he braved the stenches ol the Egyptian village in Cairo, and created quite a sensation on their visit to that- quarter. About 30 children and some men followed them about the streets, which are only about ten feet wide, with a turn at every twenty yards. They wore informed that they were the first Englishmen who had ever visited te village. In the end one of the leaders asked them to go as they were creating too much excitement. In these villages the cows dogs, poultry and donkeys all go inside the houses. In Shannon pound at present is a bay mare with white face. it will be sold by public auction on 10th March if not previously claimed. The l'res'byterian Church services for to-morrow (Sunday) will be held at Levin at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and at Ohau (not Koput-aroa as advertised among i.lie notices which appear on page 4) a> 2 p.m. The services wili be conducted iy I?ev.
