The Chronicle PUBLISHED DAILY. LEVIN. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1915 WHAT ARE WE DOING FOR THE WAR?
J i seems to us that at the proseiit tnno the people ui Levin are not realising their responsibility 111 keeping up ii "Continual stream of help to the war funds. We grant that the mental thermometer rose up to fever heat a little while since, but at present it is la.st getting to below zero. There is liu warmth of effort and we go on peacefully as though the war was over ami ;i full settlement made. Th« news which oomes by cable is greedily read; we talk of the awful sacrifice •oi lil'e, and have got so used to the .sensational news that we are not in the least disturbed, and at the present moment no effort is being made to assist in the world-wide struggle. We are "resting upon our oars," doing nothing. This is not creditable to any British community, and we ought to ue ashamed of our letnargy. Probably aaiothor wave of patriotism may flow over us, but these spasmodic experiences do not count for much. Brave souls doi not ebb and flow with the tide If there is an object to be gained they press steadily towards it, and sacrifice ease and pleasure to attain ft. thousands are suffering poverty, privation and death on the battlefields of France; British troops are fighting for liberty—our liberty— and blood e being spilled as never before in p ße ear til's history; the people of the British Isles are feeling the strain of • upporting the thousands of refugees who nee thrown upon theni in dire poverty and distress. What are we doing 11 the midst of it all V Has our zeal fizzled ouitP Are we tired of doing our legitimate share of help? If not, wny are we going on day after day •ae it no war existed We must change out attitude. We must shake ourselves tree of sloth, and let the world see that we mean to so act that our example shall stand out in strong relief as Good Samaritans. .Leaving out ail outside considerations we owe it to the men of our own land who are leaving home and loved ones to sacrifice their lives for our national existence—we owe it to them to make our sacrifices also for honour, humanity and oivilisS'Eion.
