HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Horowheriua County Council is being hold in the Council Chambers to-day, Councillor G. Watson presiding. The following correspondence has been received and is being dealt with.— A letter from nine ratepayers in the lliakara district was received inquiring as to whether it was practicable to obtain water from The Heights, and the cost thereof. They also asked that the County Engineer report on it. Kara Tehatete made application to Im> appointed poundkeeper at Manakau. He offered to erect a suitable pound on a site provided by himself, retaining the poundage fees as remuneration. Mr E. Mudgway, of Ohan, is in neetl of a few loads of soil and asked the Council's permission to obtain it from the bank just below Mr A. McLeavey's residence. Mr D. Hannaii wrote asking the Council to attend to the question ji giving him access to .sections 5 and 7 Block IV, Waiopchu. Full particulars, age. length of service, wages, etc., of the Council's employees, was asked for by Mr R. E. Hayes, superintendent of the National Provident Fund in order to facilitate tbo. consideration by local authorities of the amendment of the Act relating to the superannuation of their employees. Tho arbitrator's award i'e tho FoxtonShaniion road was received. The sum of £50 per annum shall be paid by the Horowhenua. County to the Manawatu County for the upkeep and maintenance of the portion of the road in the Manawatu County and £14 per annum by the Horowhenua County for the portion under their jurisdiction. The Horowhenua County also to pay £60 to the Manawatu County for the upkeep of the road for the period Ist March, 1912. to Ist March, 1914. The Whakatane County Council ; s desirous of having the law enabling loca' bodies to allow a rebate for payment of rates within a certain time and recently passed a motion to that effect, rt is asking the Council to endorse the motion.
A road at Waihoanga is, according to Mr R. Bockett, getting into a bad state, and he asked that the Council attend to it before winter.
Last year £150 was placed on the estimates for the extension of the Otaki Gorge road, and a letter was received from Mr Harold Bay asking if the Council could g e t the money and proceed with the work as lie had no approach to his property. A complaint was lodged by Mr Edward Be Mey, of To Horo.' "at tlio ow-down way" in which he alleged he had been treated by the ranger in regard to his stock found on the road *t night. He complained of the pound charges, and said that two calves are missing. He also stated that he was getting advice on the matter and will adr.se the Council as to the claim it will get from him.

The. Waitanae river is still at work cnttmg away valuable land. The litost sufferer is Mr G". T\. Kemslev, and he wrote asking the Council to do something to stop it. Thn ratepayers were ■it present getting no benefits from works carried out to prevont encroachm«it, arwl for which they were rated.' Booth McDonald Ltd., wrote for particulars; - price, etc., of the Council's straker waggon. The agents in Auckland had an enquiry, and they may be able to sell it for the Council.'
