CONTROL OF MEAT SUPPLIES. SUPPLIES.
A DRASTIC MEASURE. Sydney, This Day. The Hon. W. Holman, in introducing an emergency bill to secure control of the meat supplies of New South Wales for the purposes of the Imperial Army should occasion arise, explained that Sir Gerald Strickland had receiv-
Ed a cable from the Imperial authorities, stating that in view of the largely increased demand, and army purchases by the French Government, \nd also in order to prevent an excessive
advance in Australian meats in England it desired to secure the whole Australian meat available for export during tho continuance of the war, and asked New South Wales to co-operate. Similar action had already been taken in Queensland and a similar hill introduced in Queensland.
The Bill provides for the seizure of stock and compensation for the game by a Valuation Board having full powers. Where previous contracts have ! existence the price paid though usually higher than the contracts will be absolutely fixed by the Board in order to avoid bogus contracts made for the purpose of obtaining a. higher price. Mr Holinan added that he invited the country to show its loyalty to the Imperial Government in this hour of crisis. He believed that the British Government was only protecting itself against emergencies which might arise. "We are prepared to stand behind the Empire with our last man and our last shilling.*
The Bill was passed and sent to the Legislative Council where it passed all stages without opposition.
