Searchers are hot. on the trail and expect to find the suspected man at any time. Ho is a healthy and hardened bushman aml may elude his pursuers for fconie time but he is without food or shelter and it is expected that hunger will force him to show himself. Accused is a farmer aged 29 years, and a brother ol Leslie Keals, the lidisband of tho murdered woman. lie has been missing since the tragedy. HEAVY PENALTIES. Wellington, Feb. 11. At the S.M. Court to-day Trooper •Jolm James Clayton, concerned in the brawl in Manners Street oil Saturday night was fined £5 or one month's imprisonment lor insisting arrest by a countable; fined £2 or seven days for lis-
orderly conduct while drunk, and 1 was ordered to pay £2 15s, damage to the cab in which he was taken to tho lockup. The alternative in tho latter case was seven days' imprisonment. Robert Porteous Brown, an oxtrooper, who was arrested at tho same time as Clayton, was also severely dealt with. He was sentonced to two months' imprisonment for assaulting the constable; fined £3 or one month for using obscene language; fined £5 or one month for assaulting a civilian who was assisting the polioc ; and also ordered' to pay 25s or three days' "in- j prisonment for .damaging tho constable's uniform. His Worship refused to impose n fine in tho cases of assaulting the police as lie held that the latter must >io protected as far as possible. He commented on the serious nature of the charges and said it was deplorable io see so many disgraceful scenes created by troopers. Inspector Hendry said that tho majority of the men at the Trent-ham camp, who came into town, were sober, earnest young fellows, who conducted themselves with decorum.
