KAPITI ISLAND.
SCHOOL PICNIC. The first school picnic ever held on the Island took place a few days ago. Unfortunately the Governor and Mrs Bennett, were, owing to the rough sea, uuable to be present. It had been their intention to have steamed across in their yacht from Rongatera Bay. However, a party of liberals, who had arrived from Wanganui l their launch Monarch, on holiday bent, accepted the invitation to be present. The weather was beautiful aiid the youngsters and their parents and friends thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The usual sports were indulged n, but the feature of the picnic was the singing of the Kapiti choir led by Miss Rangi Webber. Certainly the children are born musicians and their voices are remarkably sweet. When they grow older and their voices are carefully "trained they will make a namo for themselves in the musical world. Mr Webber, under whose direction the musical part of their educatio nis carried on, may well be proud of his pupils.
Mr Diirie, as spokesman for the visitors, said that ho and his friends were not only surprised but delighted at "lie unexpected treat they had been given, and ended a pithy speech by wishing the Kapiti school every success.
Mr Olphert, the headmaster, returned thanks on behalf of the "children" for the "kindly remarks made. A pleasant day was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
