The value of tlie annual examinati hi for certificates for proficiency in spraying conduced by the Agricultural Department is (says the Journal . f Agriculture) becoming well recognised both by persons possessing small or domestic orchards .and by those who desire to undertake the care of such properties. This year thirty persons notified their intention of sitting, and of these twelve sat. and eight passed tb examination. A number withdrew f.s they felt they did not possess knowledge of the various subjects. a:u! desired to study further with the view of coming up for examination next year. A serious brawl took place in Man-nfor.s-frtreet, Wellington on Saturday night. A member of the reinforcements, encamped at Trentbam. named James Clayton, was placed under arrest for being dni>nk and disorderly. As tlio constable proceeded to place Clayton in a cab there was much shouting and disorder, and a number of men pushed forward, presumably with the idea of rescuing the trooper from the arms of the law. Amongst thesei was a trooper in plain clothes, named Robert Brown, and he is alleged to hare been "foremost in the attempt to inter--1 fere with the arrest. Constable Thom in plain clothes was at hand, and when ho. in turn, nr nested Brown, there was an ugly demonstration. The struggle to arrest both men was a- lively affair in which the crowd took sides, mostly against the police. Things were mixed up for a while, but eventually thev were taken to Lamhton Quay police station. Several oonjtfa'olp' were mauled, but no one injured
