A FIRE BRIGADE MATTER.

(To the Editor.) tiiv, —1 see by yuur iswuu of February 2nd rv our wxponsce to Timaru, at the United Conference and Demonstration, which J regard as an insult to our worthy captain. 1 may etate that our delegate is elected by the Brigade every year. As tho trip to Timaru extended over a fortnight, no member could .sparo the time off, so n-s our captain whs unanimously elected by the Brigade he decided to go, ii nd judging by the tone of somo of the- councillors the captain was out for n holiday at the ratepayers' expense-, which I take as a personal insult. [f our captain wanted a holiday ho could take one without taking the hut round to the ratepayers. I suppose if it whs (i pnid institution such as tin- baths, showgrounds, otc. £20 would be voted. The Conference is the only tiling that keeps the brigades of New Zealand together. T suppose there will be 120 delegates there, as every Brigade in New Zealand will be represented, except Lovin. Then there is the accident insurance to be considered, which is of great benefit to firemen. If the brigade is not worth a delegate at :he Conference it is time it disbanded and gave the builders a chance-. T should like to state what tho Council finds us. ■T7e havo working coats, which we havo had for eleven years! and wo find our own pants and boots, which the Council should find us. We have five helmets- for 15 men, which we have had the same length of time. So T think the Brigade is. economically run. If the Council wish to practise economy, they nave only to look round to soo plenty to economise on. I-Toping some other fireman will havo something to say on this for the sa.ke of our worthy captain.—lam, etc., A MEMBER OF THE BRIGADE.
