Potato crops in some of the Taranaki districts have been attacked by the blight, while the fly lias made its appearance among the swede turnips. A large tangi is at present being held at Poroutawhao where a wellknown Maori named Tatana, died a few days ago. A great number of Maoris from other districts are arriving. A farmer in the Oanutru district has decided to give to the Belgian relief fund what money he receives this year for his wheat crop 111 excess of 5s a bushel. The new telephone line between I'ahiatua and Palmerston North is almost completed. The route is much shorter than th© old line, and' traverses the road over the Tararuas known as the Palmerston track. Recruits are now being enrolled for the Sixth Reinforoement draft of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The Sixth Contingent will probably not leave until about the middle of March. A lady had a very narrow escape from ; bcing taken by a shark while bathing 011 the Napier beach last week. The shark, which was about nine or ten feet long, went close to the bather, who was almost in a state of collapse through fright. Fortunately, several other bathers were in tlio vicinity, and they succeeded in driving the shark away. A resident of Cobden (Grey district) who had at considerable expense built a large aviary for breeding canaries, was surprised that the weasels had got under the framework of the aviary, having actually bored under the ground and destroyed all his 'birds and five nests. It was all done in one night, nothing but the holds being left bo tell the tale. A Mangamaire fanner, Mr F. W. Blatchford, hadi a splendiid return from a line ol ewes this season (says the Paliiatna Herald). The lambs reared by 204 ewes totalled 280, a percentage of 137. Of this number 95 per cent were recently dratted l by u fat stock buyer, while the balance were yarded at the stock sale at Pahiatua, and realised 10s 6d each. Some time during Saturday night the premises of Messrs Stiles and Matlieson were forcibly raided, the front door being burst open with a .jemmy and the lock destroyed. Nothing, has been missed.
